Exam & cleaning

Dental exams and cleanings are generally recommended every six months. For those who maintain good oral hygiene, a check-up and cleaning every six months is usually sufficient. However, for individuals with chronic conditions such as periodontal disease, diabetes, or for smokers, it is advisable to have a check-up and cleaning every 3 to 4 months.

composite resin

Composite resin is a durable dental restorative material that closely matches the color of natural teeth. It can be applied directly without the need for molds or scans, allowing for same-day treatment. Composite resin is used in a variety of treatments, most commonly for simple cavity repairs that do not require root canal treatment, as well as for worn teeth or to fill gaps between teeth for aesthetic purposes.

Inlay & onlay

An inlay or onlay is used when there is decay on the sides of the teeth or when the extent of the cavity is too large to be addressed with composite resin. During the first visit, the decay is removed, and a mold or scan is taken to send to a dental lab for inlay or onlay fabrication. On the following visit, the inlay or onlay is fitted and bonded to the tooth.

Crown & bridge

A crown treatment involves covering the entire surface of a tooth and is typically used when the cavity is extensive and the remaining tooth structure is thin, or to protect a tooth after root canal treatment. It can also be used to protect cracked or fractured teeth. Zirconia is one of the most commonly used materials for crowns today.
Bridge treatment involves connecting and covering two or more teeth to replace a missing tooth. If a tooth is lost, the adjacent teeth on either side of the gap are reduced, and crowns are placed on them, with an artificial tooth in between to restore the missing area. This treatment helps restore oral function.

Root canal treatment

The formal name for root canal treatment is endodontic therapy. It is the last resort for treating an infected tooth while preserving the natural tooth as much as possible. When the tooth’s pulp, made up of blood vessels and nerves, becomes irreversibly infected due to decay, the pulp is removed, and the resulting space is filled with clean dental materials to maintain the tooth’s function.

Implant

An implant is a screw-like artificial tooth that is placed in the jawbone where a tooth is missing, providing a function similar to that of a natural tooth. Before placing an implant, if there is insufficient bone, additional procedures such as bone grafting may be necessary to ensure proper osseointegration.

Veneer

Veneers are used for cosmetic purposes when there is a gap between the front teeth or when the shape of the front teeth is not ideal. The procedure involves minimally shaving the surface of the teeth and bonding a thin ceramic veneer to create an aesthetically pleasing tooth shape.

Teeth whitening

Teeth whitening involves using safe whitening agents like hydrogen peroxide, administered at a dental office, to whiten discolored teeth. This treatment does more than just change the color; it restores the teeth to their original color by removing stains and discoloration. There are two types of whitening: at-home whitening kits and professional, in-office whitening treatments, like those offered at UPenn Barun Dental. For maximum effectiveness, it is recommended to use both methods in combination.

Dentures

When several or all teeth are missing and it is difficult to restore full chewing function with fixed prostheses, dentures may be considered. There are full dentures and partial dentures. Full dentures are used when all teeth are missing, and they rest on the gums and jawbone. Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain, attaching to them while filling in the missing areas.

Tooth extraction

Tooth extraction is performed when a tooth is severely loosened due to periodontitis, when decay is too advanced to restore, or when a tooth is significantly damaged due to trauma. Extractions may also be necessary to create space for orthodontic treatment, when baby teeth do not fall out properly, or in the case of impacted wisdom teeth.

Deep cleaning

Deep cleaning (gum treatment) is used to address inflammation, swelling, bleeding, and pain caused by plaque and tartar buildup around the teeth. While gum disease is often perceived as a minor issue, delaying treatment until symptoms appear can lead to more severe consequences, such as bone loss and tooth instability, potentially resulting in tooth loss. Regular check-ups and cleanings are essential for preventing gum disease.

BRUXISM

Bruxism appliances include devices like night guards and splints. A night guard is worn during sleep to protect the teeth from grinding, while a splint, also known as an occlusal stabilization device, helps stabilize the bite, protect the teeth, and allows the jaw joint to rest.
